This week I was talking with someone about Flintolabs and the AI residency, and talking about how this caters to middle and high school students. They asked me if we have had high school students go through this successfully.

I understand where the question comes from. So let me tell you about Saturday. At Demo Day, an eighth grader finished demoing his AI-powered ergonomic sensor, and the questions started coming. Target market. TAM. SAM. He fielded every single one of them with a composure I did not expect from a rising eighth grader. And it was not just him. Every student answered the same way, relevant, to the point, no fumbling, completely sure of themselves.

Another moment that really made me stop was a tenth grader. Her app had crashed minutes before she was set to demo. She did not panic. She did not flinch. She just said, my app crashed, but I have screenshots, so let me walk you through it. And she did.

I keep thinking about what those moments actually required. Handling stress, working through chaos, adapting on the spot, reading a situation when it does not go to plan and deciding what to do next. At work, employees that can navigate these kinds of situations well are the ones who end up successful. Building that skill starting in school sets these students up for the same.

Prepping for and presenting at Demo Day teaches these added skills, on top of everything the learning and the residency already build. Students learn to handle the things that go wrong at the last minute, to fit everything that matters into five minutes, to articulate an idea clearly and hold their own in the Q&A. None of that shows up on a transcript, and these are the skills we want them building now, long before the workplace and college asks for them.

When I told the person that all six of our Demo Day presenters were middle and high schoolers, they could not believe it. They were stunned.

Registration: Open now, deadline Tuesday, June 30, 2026 · Finals: Thursday, August 13, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

What: The UDC Capital Cup is a global entrepreneurship competition run by the University of the District of Columbia, backed by the National Science Foundation through UDC's AI and Robotics initiative. Students research the global market, propose a product or service with international potential, and build out the pricing, promotion, and distribution strategy to bring it to life.

Who: Open to high school students worldwide. Compete in teams of up to three. Free to enter.

Format: Two rounds. For the qualifier, teams submit a YouTube video pitch of four minutes or less. The top five teams are invited to present in person at UDC in Washington, D.C., on August 13, where the winner is chosen live.

What makes it special: This is real venture-building judged by faculty with AI and innovation expertise, and more teams every year fold AI into their solutions. A short video pitch is a low-pressure way in, and making the finals means defending your idea on a real stage in the nation's capital.

Perfect for: The student who just watched Demo Day and thought "I could do that." If you have an idea and four minutes to make the case, this is the summer to put it in front of judges who fund and build for a living.

🌍 Davos has a new idea. Our residency runs it.

The World Economic Forum built its 2026 Davos agenda around one question: as AI rewrites jobs, what actually prepares people for work? The answer the Forum landed on is not another credential. It is real work, folded into learning from the very start.

At Davos, the Forum launched a Learning-to-Earning Sandbox, bringing universities, employers, and governments together to design models that connect paid work directly to education. It builds on apprenticeships, internships, and work-integrated degrees, all aimed at linking skill-building straight to employment instead of waiting until after graduation.

The Forum's research points the same direction. Wages for AI roles have climbed 27% since 2019, yet employers still cannot hire fast enough. And the skills they say matter most, creativity, innovation, and adaptability, are also the hardest to automate and the easiest to overlook on a transcript.

That last point is exactly what the Flintolabs AI residency builds. Students work alongside AI co-workers, a project manager, a product manager, and an architect, on real projects that ship to real users. The AI does not do the work for them but simulates a team that challenges and makes the student think, which is how judgment and adaptability actually get built. Our students are already living the model the Forum is designing.

📈 Ten years later, the kids who built are still ahead

Does building real projects in school actually matter a decade later? A longitudinal study tracked 237 graduates for ten years to find out. The students who learned by building kept pulling ahead.

Researchers compared graduates who spent at least a third of their education in project-based learning against matched peers from traditional, lecture-based programs. By year ten, the project-based group scored higher on nearly every workplace skill employers say they struggle to find, and the gap kept widening over time instead of shrinking.

The biggest differences showed up in adaptability, collaboration, and problem-solving, and by year ten the project-based group earned about 12% more on average. One detail stands out though: technical proficiency showed almost no difference between the two groups. The advantage was not in what they knew. It was in how they learned and worked.

That is the whole point of building real things. You cannot memorize judgment, and you cannot Google your way through ambiguity. Those who ship projects, hit walls, and figure out the next move are practicing the exact skills that compound over ten years as per this study. The way you learned to think does not fade, it multiplies.

Lume: AI-powered ergonomic sensor for spinal health

During the Demo day last week, Rayhan Siraj, an 8th grader from Fairfax, VA, stood up and pitched his app. Lume is his wearable for workplace and spinal health, built for the people who sit the longest, remote workers and students. "Prolonged sitting is a silent epidemic," he opened, citing the figure that beyond about seven hours of sitting, each extra hour can raise overall mortality risk by 5%.

Rayhan was the Judges pick for the ‘Best Presenter of the day’.

His solution is the Lume Pod, a privacy-focused wearable that straps to your back and tracks posture, stress, and ambient light, then nudges you with a haptic buzz or audio cue the moment unhealthy patterns begin. Under the hood, he walked through IMUs for posture, radar for breathing rate, and a heart sensor, with on-device AI handling pattern recognition so health data never leaves the band. Three things set it apart, he said: privacy through edge computing, an AI overview that connects posture habits to stress, and a plug-and-play setup that needs no tech experience.

Then he ran a live demo. Using his phone as a stand-in for the pod, he recalibrated to a sitting posture and showed how the device flags a slouch. "Imagine this strapped to your back," he said, "and if you're slouching, it will definitely know." He ended the session to reveal a clean overview with an AI insight, then saved it.

The business thinking was just as sharp. He laid out three revenue pillars across hardware, subscriptions, and an ecosystem of bands and batteries, then sized the opportunity: a $180 billion market at a $300 price point, launching to remote workers first before scaling to students and enterprise wellness programs.

What sealed it was the Q&A. Asked about competitors, he named smartwatches without flinching, then explained why a wrist device cannot read your spine the way a back-worn pod can. Asked what users could one day ask Lume, he was honest about the roadmap: an LLM that answers questions from your recorded data, a feature he had not built into the prototype yet. That is a middle schooler fielding judge questions in real time.

Rayhan started with a problem he noticed around him, kept refining it and arrived at a venture he could defend out loud to a room of industry leaders.
