Nobody asked him why.

We've been running Flintolabs for more than a year now. In that time Ayesha and I have looked at a lot of things built for students: camps, tools, internships, platforms. Enough of them that we'd started forming opinions about what makes one actually work and what makes one only look like it works.

Opinions formed inside your own company are dangerous. So when we find someone who can push back on us, we take the meeting.

I had two conversations last week.

The first was with a workforce readiness expert at a university here in Colorado. I went in wanting her to poke holes in what we're building. She did something more useful, she walked me through the programs that came before us. Well funded. Backed by names you would recognize. Most of them were offered as a choice for students, paid for, but went unused. The reason was not that they were bad, but anything offered without a clear structure and outcomes was difficult to adopt. The one model that worked was the one with a real framework and staff who worked closely with the students. It was expensive. It was hard to run. It also worked.

The second conversation was with a friend. Her child did a summer internship, and the premise was genuinely good: students solving problems for local businesses. Real work, real stakes. Exactly the thing I would have signed my own child up for. The student completed it in a day because it was not structured to challenge the smart kid of today. Nobody asked why he solved it the way he did. It never built from foundations toward anything with “desirable difficulty” in it. He did what was asked, and then there was nothing left to do. He came out with a line on a résumé and roughly the same knowledge he went in with.

Both stories have the same shape. The idea was fine. In the second one, the idea was excellent. What was missing in both was structure, and somebody paying close attention.

This is the part nobody wants to hear, because it's the expensive part. It's much easier to build a platform, or to run a program that photographs well, than it is to sit with a fourteen-year-old every week and ask her why she chose that approach.

But that's the whole thing. That's where the learning is.

A good idea with no structure gets you a day of work. A good idea with weekly review, real feedback, and someone waiting to see what you built gets you a kid who can do it again without you.

That whole musing came out of me asking other people what they've seen. Now I'd like to ask you.

What: InvestQuest is the self-guided version of the Stock Market Game, the investing simulation the SIFMA Foundation has run since 1977. You start with a virtual $100,000 and grow it over a simulated three-year period using real historical market data, choosing beginner, intermediate, or advanced. It teaches long-term investing, diversification, and risk by letting you practice rather than lecturing you.

Who: Any student. Unlike the classroom version, which a teacher registers, InvestQuest is self-guided, so a curious student can start on their own, in a browser or through the free app.

Format: Go to smgiq.org, pick a level, and start. A full run takes about 30 to 40 minutes of real decision-making. If a student wants the longer, competitive team version, the full Stock Market Game is open for the 2026-2027 school year through a teacher.

Why it's great: It is the rare free tool with a built-in reason to finish, a portfolio you are trying to grow and a clear end point.

💸 Schools are paying for tools students never open

Here is a number that should stop any parent counting on their school's technology to prepare their kid. When one analysis tracked how districts actually used the software they bought, it found that on average two-thirds of the licenses went unused. In some districts, up to 90% sat idle. Not bad tools, just unused ones.

The 74 reported this spring on how deep the problem runs. One district discovered it had bought licenses for more than 1,000 separate tools. When leaders finally went through the list, their test was blunt: if there is no clear reason a tool is driving student learning, stop paying for it. The reform they are now trying, outcomes-based contracting, only pays vendors when students actually use the product and it actually works. The fact that this is considered innovative tells you how normal the waste had become.

The lesson underneath the spreadsheet is the one that matters for a family. Access to a tool is not the same as learning. A login a student never uses teaches nothing. The thing that turns a tool into learning is not the tool. It is the structure around it, a reason to start, the framework for you to do work, guided by an expert, a goal that pulls you forward, and someone who notices whether you actually did the work.

That is the difference between being handed software and a program that truly gives you outcomes.

💼 Employers rank AI skills last. Here's what they rank first.

Strada's Institute for the Future of Work asked nearly 1,500 executives and senior talent leaders what they actually look for in entry-level hires. The result runs against every headline telling students to go collect AI certifications. Employers rated AI literacy as the least important skill they evaluate. At the top of the list: critical thinking and communication.

The second finding lands harder. When employers ranked candidate profiles, the one they wanted most had real work experience, an internship or project-based work relevant to the role. The profile they wanted least was a student with a 4.0 GPA and academic awards but no experience actually doing the work. The straight-A student with nothing built came in dead last.

This is not an argument against knowing things. It is an argument about what makes knowledge stick and show. A certificate says you finished a course. A project says you can do the work, made decisions, hit problems, and solved them. Strada also found AI is pushing entry-level work toward more analytical and judgment-heavy tasks, which are exactly the things you can only build by doing, not by watching.

Which is the whole case for depth over access. A tool gives a student the option to learn. A structured program where they build something real, with a deadline and people who push them, is what gets them to the finish line with proof.

The last of our summer Demo Day series.

Folio: a 10th grader's fix for a portfolio scattered across five apps

Arav, a sophomore, describes himself as interested in technology, investing, and building things that solve real problems. Folio came out of all three, and it is the perfect note to end this Demo Day series on, because it shows what happens at the far end of a structured build.

The problem he noticed is one a lot of young investors have. Their money is scattered, a little in Robinhood, a little in Cash App, with no single place that shows the whole picture. He validated it the right way, by asking classmates and family who invest, then finding the same complaint on Reddit. So he built Folio, one dashboard showing a full portfolio, total gains and losses, performance over time, and where the money actually sits. Then he added the part he cared about most: a section that does not just track your stocks, it teaches, with plain-language explanations of ideas like diversification. He built it in Vercel, connected AlphaVantage for live stock data, and deployed it so anyone can use it online.

The judges pushed on differentiation. How is this different from Robinhood? Arav's answer was that Robinhood is built for people who already know what they are doing, while Folio is one clean page for a beginner, with the learning built in. Two judges suggested integrating directly with brokerages so users would not enter holdings by hand, and made the point that in real investing, seconds matter. Arav agreed and said it was next, after he finished testing the core with real users. Another judge suggested letting teens round up and donate spare change to causes they care about. He took every note without getting defensive, which is its own skill.

Folio is not the product of a tool Arav was handed. It is the product of a program that made him carry an idea all the way from a validated problem to a deployed, working app defended in front of judges. That arc, learn the fundamentals, build the real thing, present it and take the hard questions, is the difference between a student who has access to AI and a student who has actually used it to make something. You get it only with the intentional structure of the program and demo day.

Everything in this issue points at the same thing. Just a tool or opportunity teaches nothing. What deepens learning is structure: a reason to start, something real to build, and people who guide you all along.
