One opportunity is all it takes

This week started with the excitement during the flinternship standup for students trying to work through their project’s requirements and getting acclimatized to the idea that they were working on a real app, one that many students would use. Middle schoolers getting familiar with how to break down the task into smaller ones, learning how to communicate what they think. It is a room where exponential learning takes place. The thought that kept running through my mind was that every middle schooler and high schooler deserves this, and how we make that happen.

Two weeks ago I had talked about introducing a class of CU business students to the AI tools that can be used in a consulting workflow. That class was learning by doing where they were “consulting” for Flintolabs to help give us ideas on how to scale and grow. They had a lot of great questions and this week were the final presentations. They blew my mind! Meticulous research, clear slides, actionable suggestions, grounded in the right decision frameworks - they spoke confidently and clearly. I walked out of the session with one insight - all it takes is one opportunity for the students to “learn by doing” in a safe space. Whatever those students learned in that course will stick with them for life. Kudos to the educators making that possible!

As I walked out of that session, I felt more confident about our Flinternships that help students apply what they learned in the 6 months. Practical work on a real app but grounded in concepts they've built up along the way.

🗓️ Opportunities to not miss for middle and high schoolers!

What: IAI²O is the world's premier international academic AI olympiad for teenagers, with three tracks to choose from: the AI Innovators Challenge (a rigorous AI knowledge and reasoning competition), AI for Science (applying AI to real research questions), and AI for Business (building market-ready, data-driven solutions). Top performers from the online preliminary round advance to the Global Final at MIT in September.

Who: High school students worldwide. Students can enter one or more tracks individually or as a team. No prior competition experience required.

Format: Online national preliminary round through June, with a scored AI knowledge test and project submissions depending on track. Global finalists present in person at MIT before a scientific committee including faculty from Harvard, MIT, UCLA, and the University of Toronto.

Why it's great: This is one of the few competitions that combines the rigor of an academic olympiad with real-world AI application, including a business track that mirrors exactly what Flintolabs students are already building. A spot at the MIT final is a meaningful credential for college applications, and the skills tested - critical thinking, AI reasoning, creative problem-solving - are exactly the ones that hold their value as the technology keeps changing.

🤝 When humans and AI work best together

Most people assume that combining a human with AI always produces the best result. A sweeping new review of more than 100 studies from MIT's Center for Collective Intelligence says otherwise. On average, human-AI combinations don't outperform the best human-only or AI-only system, and in some tasks, they perform worse.

The research, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, pinpoints exactly when the partnership wins: tasks where humans currently outperform AI on their own, and tasks that involve creating content. In other words, AI doesn't make a weak performer stronger. It amplifies someone who already brings judgment.

The most counterintuitive finding: the combination was statistically worse than the best solo performer in many cases. As MIT Sloan professor Thomas Malone, director of the Center for Collective Intelligence, noted, this surprised even the researchers. The implication is direct: building human-AI teams that actually work requires knowing when to let AI lead, when to keep humans in the loop, and when the human's judgment is the irreplaceable ingredient.

For students building with AI today, this research reframes what it means to be good at your job in an AI-native world. The people who thrive aren't the ones who hand everything to the model. They're the ones who know when to step in, what to question, and how to push the output further. That's a skill built by doing, not watching.

🎓 Fortune confirms: experience can't wait until college

The first job used to be where new graduates learned to think on their feet. They translated classroom theory into workplace practice, built judgment through real decisions, and figured out how to collaborate under actual pressure. That rung of the career ladder is disappearing. A new piece in Fortune by Cengage CEO Michael Hansen argues that AI is automating the tasks that once defined entry-level work, and the traditional bridge between education and employment is eroding with it.

The numbers are striking. Nearly 4.6 million students who wanted internships in 2023 couldn't get one. Meanwhile, 87% of employed graduates say internships helped them land their jobs, and more than half of those who went without believe it hurt their prospects. Now add AI shrinking the entry-level pool further, and the experience gap becomes a real crisis, one that colleges can no longer assume students will solve on their own after graduation.

Hansen's argument is that workforce readiness has to be built into education itself, not left to the job market to fix. Employers increasingly say they want judgment, adaptability, and communication, skills that only develop through doing, not through lectures or passive coursework. As Hansen writes, when real-world application is embedded in the curriculum, every student graduates with the hands-on experience needed, not just a select few.

The students who will navigate this moment are the ones who spent their high school years building real things, not waiting for college to give them a chance. The experience gap is real, but it isn't inevitable for everyone.

🎓 Flintolabs spotlight

The flinternship: where students become the ones in charge

During the Flinternship, students receive a project and a set of requirements. What they do with all of that is entirely up to them. That might sound simple. In practice, it's where most of the learning happens.

Taking a requirement and turning it into a working app means a student has to understand what the requirement actually means, figure out what's missing, and make decisions about what to prioritize. Their AI coworkers, acting as PM, architect, and project manager, are part of the project too. The intern has to make sure each of them has the information they need to do their jobs. If the thinking isn't clear, the AI coworkers have questions. And if the student hasn't thought it through, they can't answer. That pressure to know what you're building, well enough to brief a team on it, builds judgment and decision-making in a way no lecture can replicate.

But the technical output is only part of what gets built. Students also learn to manage themselves through something that isn't fully defined. They learn to ask better questions when they're stuck rather than waiting for someone to rescue them. They practice explaining their reasoning to coworkers, a skill that turns out to matter enormously in real workplaces, because being able to articulate what you're doing and why is what makes collaboration functional. When things break, and they always do, students learn to debug without panicking. These are life skills dressed up in a coding project.

The apps students ship go live on the Flintolabs Marketplace, where other students use them. That moment, when something you built is being used by a real person, is different from anything a grade can produce. Google Research's Vantage study found that the skills developed through exactly this kind of applied, collaborative, real-stakes work - critical thinking, creative problem-solving, collaboration - correlate with human expert assessment at 0.88. The skills students practice during the Flinternship aren't just good for building apps. They're the skills that rigorous evaluation is increasingly designed to find.

By Demo Day, every Flintern has a live product, a story about how they built it, and the experience of having worked through something real from start to finish. That's the kind of portfolio a college essay can't manufacture and a transcript can't capture. It's what the next generation of employers will be looking for, and what the students walking out of Flintolabs already have.
